在全知、全能天地主宰的面前，人還有甚麼自由的空間嗎?信仰常被視為一種規矩與約束，難怪人們會誤認為「God or Freedom」，「神」和「自由」僅有一方存在。
莫特曼卻提出「God and Freedom」，他認為上帝會帶來自由，上帝獨行奇事，同時也帶領我們創造新事。而這些自由，都是耶穌基督十架上救贖換來的。

The God of the Exodus and the Resurrection
信就是所望之事的實底，是未見之事的確據。(希11:1) 莫特曼指出，希伯來書這經文是說明與上帝同行是一趟盼望之旅。是自由揮灑，不受有限肉體生命的廣大時空。
亞伯拉罕因著信，蒙召的時候就遵命出去，往將來要得為業的地方去；出去的時候，還不知往哪裡去。(希11:8)
亞伯蘭就照著耶和華的吩咐去了；羅得也和他同去。亞伯蘭出哈蘭的時候年七十五歲。(創12:4)
莫特曼指出，希、創兩處新舊約經文，呼應的亞伯拉罕，走上自由之路的重大一步。
以色列人脫離埃及法老的挾制，和耶穌從十字架死亡的羞辱中復活，都是饒富象徵意義的重大事件—-關乎人重獲自由的典範。
這點，保羅說得很清楚；
基督釋放了我們，叫我們得以自由。所以要站立得穩，不要再被奴僕的軛挾制。加拉太書5:1
主就是那靈；主的靈在哪裡，那裡就得以自由。哥林多後書 第三章3:17
Freedom as the Ability to Begin
願頌讚歸與我們主耶穌基督的父神！他曾照自己的大憐憫，藉耶穌基督從死裡復活，重生了我們，叫我們有活潑的盼望，可以得著不能朽壞、不能玷污、不能衰殘、為你們存留在天上的基業。彼得前書 1:3-4
Freedom as Domination or as Community?
並不分猶太人、希利尼人，自主的、為奴的，或男或女，因為你們在基督耶穌裡都成為一了。你們既屬乎基督，就是亞伯拉罕的後裔，是照著應許承受產業的了。加拉太書3:28-29
為奴的獲得自由，而且跟應許的產業有份，並且解是嶄新的身分地位，都是因為在基督耶穌裡。
Freedom as Creative Expectation
This freedom is not an “insight into necessity”; it is an insight into potentiality. This freedom is not a harmony of the existing conditions of power; it is their harmonization with what is to come, as the prophecy of Isaiah says:
興起，發光！因為你的光已經來到！耶和華的榮耀發現照耀你。
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. (Isa 60:1)
